Coin vs. token: what is the difference?

Learn why a network-native coin and a token issued on top of a network are not exactly the same

Native coin

A coin is the native asset of its own blockchain. BTC belongs to Bitcoin, ETH to Ethereum and TRX to TRON.

Token

A token is created on an existing blockchain, commonly through a smart contract or another protocol-defined mechanism.

Why the distinction matters

The network used for a token can differ from the asset name itself. Understanding both concepts helps interpret how digital assets are represented.

Standards

Labels such as ERC-20, TRC-20 and BEP-20 describe technical standards associated with different blockchain infrastructures.
